Witherspoon also collected goods for local merchants from Indian tribes living along the Arkansas River valley at that time. In 1907, when Carter County was organized, Ponca City became its county seat; it has remained so ever since. In recent years, much attention has been focused on downtown Ponca City because it contains some remaining examples of early 19th century architecture including a bank building and courthouse constructed c1900 by A&M-Lamar University students as part of their construction project to celebrate Alma Mater's hundredth anniversary; as well as other buildings dating back to before World War II that are still used today such as the post office and stockyards at Fourth Street and Delaware Avenue NW
