The name Owasso comes from the Ojibwe word "owa," meaning "the great spirit." The town was founded in 1907 by farmers who were trying to find a place to cross the Arkansas River. They named their new settlement after General George Armstrong Custer and his cavalry unit which had fought in the Indian Wars. Owingson, Oklahoma is a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,992 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest municipality in Muskogee County and the county seat of Muskogee County. The name "Owingson" comes from the Osage word "owa," meaning "a cove." The first permanent settler in what is now Owasso City was George Ransom in 1867. He named his place after his father-in-law, Owen Judd. In 1870, James WALKER settled on land within present-day Owasso and named it Walkerville after himself and his wife Sarah Jane Walker. Mr.Walker's parents were early settlers thereabouts also as was their brother James Mclntyre Walker who founded McAlester about 1875. In 1881, William SHEPARD erected a log cabin near what is now downtown Owasso on the east side of US 64 near Tank Creek Boulevard to provide tavern services for travelers passing through that area on their way to McAlester or Jenks Territory. That same year oil began flowing from an well drilled by John Gregg off Keystone Hill Road north ofpresent day Tulsa into what would become known as Beaver Lake which included much of northern Muskogee County at that time including Owasso City Limits then part of Jenks Territory In 1901 Henry FOSTERFIELD opened a store in downtown Owasso which became a popular stopping point for wagons carrying goods to McAlester or Jenks Territory on the Arkansas River just south ofpresent day Tulsa On January 1st 1907 Enoch WILSON purchased 640 acres (2 km²) southeast of present day Owasso along US 24 from Jens Schmidt for $5 per acre (0·24 m²). This purchase also included all or part of what are now northeast Wichita Falls and northwest Ardmore . On November 7th 1912 OWASSON CITY limits were established when they were surveyed by David HARRIS with help from fellow commissioners WILLIAM SULLIVAN and JOHN BREWER . At this time most westernMuskogeeCounty boundaries had not yet been redefined following Oklahoma's admission into statehood on August 29th 1907 Enlisted man JOHN GOODMAN served with Company C 2nd Battalion 9th Regiment Kansas Infantry during World War I His remains are interred at Arlington National Cemetery Owington post office operated until 1932 From 1932 until 1959 owassontownpostoffice operated out of First Baptist Church building located adjacent to present day Walmart across US 24 adjacent to Old Fire Hall Road

However, during World War II, Owasso was destroyed by a German air raid and many of its residents were killed or injured. After the war, Owasso experienced a period of decline due to population loss and displacement from rural areas. However, in the 1990s, Owassi regained some of its former glory as an agricultural and business center.
