The town is named for Chief Wahoo, an American Indian chief who led a resistance against white settlement in the late 19th century. Owasso has a public library, two churches, and three businesses: a grain elevator, an auto dealership, and a convenience store. The first people to live in what is now Owasso were members of the Creek Nation who migrated from central Oklahoma in the 1820s. In 1828, settlers arrived in what is now Owasso and began trading with the Indians. They built homes near where they would live until settler settlements began appearing around 1840-1860. One early settler was John Hancey and his family who founded Hanceytown on land that he donated to the town site in 1845. By 1860, there were 10 families living in Owasso with over 100 residents when it became apparent that Tulsa would be larger than any one community could support alone. In 1902–1903, Wichita State Teachers College students traveled to Tulsa to study agriculture at Cowles Agricultural School run by then-president James Cowles Sr., which later became Oral Roberts University (ORU). When ORU opened its doors for business as Oral Roberts University Foundation School of Agriculture in 1907the name given to school changed from Cowles Agricultural School toOWASSO UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SCIENCE when OWASSO become chartered as an independent city on January 1st 1909
