Owasso, Oklahoma is located in the eastern panhandle of Oklahoma. It was founded by the Osage people in 1824 and named for Owsatcha, a chief of the village of that name. The town was platted in 1868 and becoming a city in 1907. The population was 10,000 when it merged with Jenks to form Owasso-Jenks in 1954. Owasso has a rich history that can be traced back to its founding days. The Osage people were contemporaries of the Wichita people on the east side of what is now Oklahoma. In 1824, they moved westward and settled at what is now Owasso after meeting them there on an hunting trip. The Oskaloosa tribe also lived there before they were forcibly removed by the US government in 1830 pursuant to treaty negotiations with the Cherokee Nation. In 1868, Owasso was platted as a city by Jens Werner Geyer and others under US law following approval from Indian Territory Governor James Bowie. At that time, it had a population of only 581 residents; however, it soon grew rapidly due to natural resources such as coal and oil being developed hereabouts. By 1907, owassosuniversity had been established as well as several other businesses including banks and hotels- making this small town one of major economic engines within Indian Territory during this time period In 1954, when Tulsa metropolitan area became part of the new United States after World War II, Owasso became part of Tulsa proper with its own city government. Its current form began taking shape circa 1974 when Jenks amalgamated with Owasso to form one citywide entity known as "Owasso-Jenks." As one dominant force within local politics for over half century (until merger into Tulsa), Owassi-Jenks has made significant contributions to both its citizens and its community at large - many attributing their success to their unwavering dedication to public service Since 2004 Ogle County has jurisdiction over all or portions of five towns (Aurora Hills/University Park/Wichita Heights/Mooretown) within its borders: Jenks/Osage City (northwest corner), Jenkville (southwest corner), North Range Townships ( northeast corner), East Range Townships ( northwest corner), and South Range Townships ( southeast corner). This arrangement provides more efficientokeship between county officials since Ogle County encompasses larger geographic areas than any individual town or township Our county commissioners are elected every two years insteadof term limits which gives us more control over our destiny
Owasso was founded in 1881 by Major General Edwin Vinyard. The town was named for Owasso Creek, which ran through the area. The first store and post office was opened in 1882. A cotton gin and other industrial businesses were erected in the early years of Owasso's development, but they all failed within a few years. In 1886, Owasso became a city and began to develop as a commercial center. In 1909, the Oklahoma Legislature created the City Corporation to oversee business activities within the city limits. The corporation soon became an important factor in downtownOWASSO development and its role continues today.
