In 1829, General Winfield Scott came across a Native American group calledthe Kiowa tribe living near Tulsa during his campaigns against Mexico City River Campaigns (1829-30). Colonel James McLaws convinced Scott to march on Tulsa instead because there would be more troops available if he went east than west! When McLaws got lost one day while marching across country towards Tulsa on horseback, some Kiowa snatched him up just before he could cross a stream! As it turned out, McClaws never reached Tulsa; however McClaws’ body still hangs from Black Mesa Dam today! A few months later (in 1830), another general named Zachary Taylor marched south from St Louis with 5 battalions of infantry under command accompanied by several artillery pieces under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer – all looking for what had happened to McLawS) In addition to supplies brought overland by wagon trainloads during this time period such as flour, bacon, beef cattle etc., also brought over were hundreds of native womenados slaves whom many farmers considered necessary for crop rotation purposes since most white men refused or failedto lease land or recruit local manpower necessary for cotton cultivation/processing operations.- “Cotton country lay fallow; no man could till it save those exempted by law from service within five miles of slavery; nowhere else would slaves have been needed so abundantly”(Harrison Vann Woodward). Cotton production increased rapidly due largely to slave labor supplied by other states especially Kentucky where planters drained swamps for water buffalo herds then leased them back to free Negroes; “this system worked like clockwork so that within two years [of emancipation], 400 thousand acres had been converted intoslave holdings throughout Georgia”(Moorehead). In 1840Oklahoma Territory was organized following territorial expansion resulting from Mexican War dance scene outside Guthrie
