The community began as a small post office founded in 1881 by Dr. John R. Owasso and his wife Anna Maria. Its name honors General William Tecumseh Sherman, who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as an US senator from Kansas before taking office as US president in 1865. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,547 people residing in the town: 514 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24% were non-families. 21% of all households were made up of individuals and 8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2+1 versus 0+1 for families;the average family size was 3+.
