Owasso is a town in Payne County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Owasso is the county seat of Payne County. It is located on the east side of the Arkansas River. The town was founded in 1905 by John and Martha Owasso. The first post office was established in 1907. The Owassos built a log cabin on their farmstead known as "The Cabin". They also built a store and began to sell goods to the surrounding area. In 1912 they started to build a school which they named "Missouri School" because it was donated by Miss Missouri Owen (the sister of John Owasso). In 1916 they added a second floor to the school and called it "Arkansas School". In 1930 they moved their store across the river to what is now known as Main Street. In 1956, Owasso incorporated as a municipality and changed its name to Owasso Township. A year later, it changed its name again to Payne County when it became an official county seat of Payne County. On July 1, 1978, Payne County merged with neighboring Delaware County into one unified county government under then-County Commissioner Donnell Fordham; this event is generally considered to be when Owasso officially became part of the city of Tulsa metropolitan area

Owasso, Oklahoma is a town in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,626 at the 2010 census. Owasso is the county seat of Stephens County. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The town was founded by Presbyterians in 1907 as a small farming community on the banks of the Arkansas River. The name "Owasso" comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "place where water flows easily." By 1912, Owasso had a post office and two stores. In 1916, Owasso became the site of one of the first oil wells in Oklahoma when J H Smith discovered oil near Owasso and began production that year. A school was built in 1936 and named for Mrs Johnathan Rankin which served grades K-12 until it was closed in 1978 due to budget cuts. In 1957, Owasso voters approved a $1 million bond issue to build a high school and other public facilities within walking distance of their villages or townships; however, construction never started because of lack of funds. In 1972, when Stephens County merged with Oklahoman County, Owasso became its new county seat and all public functions were transferred to that location including government buildings including court houses and jails which remain there today (although they are not used). On July 16th 1948 Comanche Nation leader Big Chief Little Chief Satchel Paige made an appearance at lunchtime at Coweta Baptist Church located west side of town on US 271 North during his famous speech known as “The Great Treatise” before traveling east to grass roots meetings throughout Indian Territory continuing his preaching tour across America until his death on July 17th 1948 less than three weeks after making this address at Coweta Baptist Church some 120 miles southeast from Wichita Falls Texas just short trip from Tulsa
On October 15, 1907, Owasso was founded as a town in Benton County, Oklahoma. The town was named for the owls that were spotted on the property soon after it was platted. The first post office opened in 1908 and remained in operation until 1949. In 1909, the first school building was erected and served as the town's sole educational institution until it closed in 1954. The first commercial structure was built in 1912 and served as the only store in town until it closed in 1944. In 1916, a railroad line linking nearby Haskell City to Tulsa arrived and quickly became a key factor in Owasso's growth; however, the station closed shortly after its opening. In 1927, Owasso formed its own political district which allowed it to elect its own representatives to local government instead of being bound by Benton County politics. This system lasted until 1959 when county-wide voting replaced congressional representation within Oklahoma.[6]
