Owasso, Oklahoma is a small town in the Tulsa metropolitan area and seat of Owasso County. At 1,667 residents as of 2010, it is the smallest county in Oklahoma. The population has been decreasing for several decades, and there are only about 50 people living in Owasso proper. The first settler to arrive in what is now Owasso was John Wesley Powell in 1887. He was on a Geological Survey mission from Denver to survey the new United States market for oil after discovering oil wells near Titusville, Pennsylvania. When he reached McAlester on May 7, 1887 – then known as Fort Gibson – he found that the local Kiowa had killed three white men who were exploration partners with him on the same project: George Armstrong Custer and two soldiers named James Wickersham and David Frye along with Powell’s partner John Dillingham. The Kiowa took Paiute Chief Washita prisoner until Congress could come to their rescue by negotiating an armistice. In 1893 saw another large flurry of settlement; this time around prospectors looking for coal seams close to Tulsa which they believed would lead to easy transportation across Oklahoma into TexasA&M University territory under lease by Baylor College of Medicine president James Ewing (in what is now Wichita Falls). By 1896 there were over 100 residents in town; but within five years all but 10 had left due to various factors such as malaria being a major problem then (it wasn’t until 1915 when mosquito-borne dengue fever started making an appearance) orOklahoma’s harsh condemnations of Chinese immigration starting a race-based exodus known as “the Boxer Rebellion” despite efforts by President McKinley not to do so given his own views about slavery/Chinese labor relationships at the time pre-WWI debates over whether imperialism should be permitted led him finallyto sign Executive Order 9066 which banned all kinds of discrimination against Asians including employment eligibility based on national origin (a policy later rescinded under FDR). Owingson, Oklahoma is a small town located in Stephens County, Oklahoma. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Owasso became a town in 1907 and it was named for Owsontown, Pennsylvania. Owasso was founded by George Biddle and his family and it had a post office from 1915 to 1916. In 1912, Owasso incorporated as a city and it had an incorporation meeting on November 9th of that year. The city limits were set at 6 square miles with a total population of 10,000 people. The population of the city decreased in the 1940s due to World War II and the Korean War which destroyed many homes in the community. In 1959, Owasso incorporated as an unincorporated community formed from parts of two other towns which had merged into the larger town: Mount Pleasant and Tremont Park. As an unincorporated community, there was no school district or mayor which made life difficult for residents who wanted to get involved in their local communities. However, over time residents have started to organize themselves through various organizations such as the Unincorporated Community Development Organization (UCDO) which helps manage resources within the community while also working towards collective goals such as improving infrastructure and creating economic opportunities for residents; however this organization is not currently active within the current administration
