Owasso is a town in far western Oklahoma, United States. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Arkansas River and is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1907 by oilmen who named it after Owasso, a small village in what is now Arkansas County, Kansas. At its peak in the 1920s Owasso had a population of 10,000 people but has since declined to 5,000 residents today. The first permanent settler in Owasso was John A. Winchester who arrived in 1907 and platted the town on land that he owned east of present-day Highway 169. In 1912 the name of Owasso was changed to honor Edwin Fenton Gowen (1870-1931), governor of Oklahoma Territory from 1911-1920 and member of the U.S. Senate from 1913-1916; Gowen had donated land for the town limits and additional acres were added subsequent years until it consisted of . In 1925 local oilman Hoyle Ewing purchased 1,500 acres (590 hectares) northeast ofowasso for $6,000 from David Condon which formed much of what remains today's east side ofowasso ZIP code 74609. This purchase allowed Ewing to control much residential development within his own community as well as provide access to major industrial sites near Tulsa across Arkansas River Valley including Tower Oil Company's refinery on Murphy Road about four miles southeast ofowasio limits then known as Dawson road before it became Tulsa highway 169 or just around milepost 8½ north along this now I-40 stretch between Tulsa and Enterprise OK before turning east onto old US 64/OKlahoma State Line both highways following Indian reservations boundary allproving once again these long prewar days when these boundaries still mattered
