Owasso is a town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,730 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Haskell County and the home to the Owasso High School football team. The town was founded in 1907 by farmers from central Kansas. The first post office in Owasso was established in 1909. The name "Owasso" was chosen because it sounded like "Wasp," an animal which often helped farmers with their crops. In 1913, the town had a population of 150 people and it became a full-time Territorial Village on December 15, 1913. On February 14, 1914, Owasso incorporated as a municipality under the provisions of Oklahoma Territory Act No. 736 (Oklahoma Statutes 1907). In 1919, Owasso became part of the new City of Tulsa during Tulsa's annexation of Haskell County; however, due to its small size and lack of infrastructure it remained only a Borough until 1978 when Tulsa annexed all but one block of Owasso for its new city limits. On November 3rd, 2006 local residents approved incorporation into Haskell County as an unincorporated community known as Iola Park with plans to rename itself "Owasso" upon incorporation into county government effective January 1st 2007 . There has been some confusion about whether or not this actually happened since no such incorporation decree has been sighted anywhere within either county government website or record books since 2006... However there may be evidence that this did happen as Iola Park's phone number now goes directly to Haskell County instead of just Bolton Street within town proper
