In 1907, Owasso was the site of the first commercial ammunition plant in Oklahoma. The factory produced 6-mm rifle ammunition and shotgun shells. Ammunition production continued until 1915, when it was replaced by a new plant in Jenks, Oklahoma. In 1935, the Jenks plant was closed and all ammunition production shifted to nearby McAlester, Oklahoma. The McAlester plant produced 7.62x39mm rounds from 1959 until its closure in 1986. After McAlester's closure, ammunition production switched to 5.56×45mm NATO rounds in 1993. This switch resulted in the shutdown of the Owasso plant in 2003. Ammunition exports ceased at that point as well, leaving Owasso with only shell cases and lead bullets left to produce munitions for its citizens and military members.
