Some did choose new names such as Black Hills (now South Dakota), Choctaw Nation (now Arkansas), Cherokee Nation (now Alabama), Kiowa Tribe (now Arizona) – all names which are still used today by some Native American groups in Perry County outside Tulsa. However, most settlers decided against changing their names because they felt it would identify them more closely with white America than with their Indian heritage.
