However, most residents abandoned their homes in the new city shortly thereafter because there were no jobs or opportunity for them there. After Tulsa's decline in popularity in the 1870s and 1880s, many residents moved back to rural areas throughout northeast Oklahoma untilOklahoma Statehood in 1907 created new opportunities for growth withinOKlahoma City metropolitan area).
