Okmulgee (pronounced "oke-muh-lee") is a city in and the county seat of Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa–Muskogee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first step in developing Okmulgee was acquiring land from the Creek Nation. In 1867, James A. Butler founded a flour mill on the site now known as Butler Mill Park. This mill became one of the largest in central Oklahoma and exported its flour all over the US until it closed in 1903. In 1907, Okmulgee merged with Muskogee County to form one consolidated government under Chief Justice John J. Sims. The merger resulted in an increase in business opportunities for Okmulgee and its citizens because it united two neighboring counties into one entity that could better serve its people and economy. During World War II, Okmulgee was host to military airfields used by both Allied bomber forces and Japanese fighter planes during their campaigns against America's southern allies; these operations continue to this day as remnants of World War II activity still define much about what makes Okmulkee unique today: More than 10% of all total economic activity within Muskogee County comes from military service or related industries!
