Okmulgee is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 7,895 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County. The city is the commercial and cultural center for Muskogee County. The village of Okmulgee was founded by settlers in 1874 as a small trading post on the Arkansas River between Tulsa and Jenks. In 1881, it became the first town in Muskogee County when it was platted from land east of present-day Tulsa. The name "Okmulgee" means "place where water flows abundantly." In 1907, Okmulgee became one of two cities in Oklahoma that were not incorporated until 1912 when all other towns inMuskogee County were made so by an act of the state legislature. At that time, only Tulsa had been incorporated as a city. Oklahoma City annexed Okmulkee in 1907 and then merged with it in 1907 to form what would become known as Oklahoma City–Muskogee (OKC-M). On July 1, 1912, Okmulkee incorporation was formalized with an act of the State Legislature which granted all other unincorporated towns within Muskogee County municipal status under one single governing body—the Council on Municipal Affairs (CMA). This gave rise to various nicknames for this new municipality such as "Counciltown" or simply "Okmulkee". Oklahoma City-Muskogee continued toexist separate from each other until 1958 when they merged into what would later become Oklahoma City proper under an act of the state legislature following years of consolidation among several municipalities within OKC-M including Okmulkee and Wichita Falls.
