Oklahoma was first organized as a territory of the United States in 1907. The area that is now Oklahoma was part of Texas before being acquired by Oklahoma in 1907. The name "Oklahoma" comes from the Choctaw word "oqualla." In 1907, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution designating this area as an Indian Territory and approved the creation of what would eventually become Okmulgee County. The county was established on November 3, 1907, and its current boundaries were set in 1912 when Tulsa County was created to the south and east and Haskell County to the north. The history of Okmulgee County can be traced back to 1881 when it was included within Cherokee Nation lands east of the Arkansas River. This area had been annexed by Texas during the Mexican-American War because of its strategic location between Mexico City and Dallas (then called Fort Worth). When Texas became a republic in 1848, it lost all land east of the Rio Grande to Mexico including Creek Nation lands near present-day Tulsa. In 1881, these acres were transferred to Cherokee Nation ownership through act known as Annexation Act No. 2 which provided for their inclusion within newly formed Oklahoma Territory under authority of Territorial Legislature at Kansas City, Missouri on January 16th, 1882 following ratification by both Houses of Congress on February 3rd, 1881. As part of this process, Creek Tribe members also lost their right to vote within Oklahoma Territory until they regained full citizenship in 1907 once it became a state on December 12th that year with passage by both houses of Congress of a bill entitled "An Act To Regulate Commerce And Navigation With Canada." In 1908, after several years during which no events occurred worth noting related to county government or local commerce due to small population size and lack thereof resources, Commissioner James Murtaugh recommended that funding be appropriated for construction of courthouse/ jail/ road/ school district but no such funds were ever received despite repeated requests over many months from commissioners throughout OK territory! This situation led then-Commissioner Murtaugh issuing an order dated March 1st 1909 prohibiting any further expenditure without express written authorization from ISD Superintendent Manuel Dominguez! This order remains oneof most Storied Moments In OK History! In 1911 when new territorial boundaries were established following World War I which included much older Indian Territory areas such as Muskogee &c., Commissioner John Sutherlin recommended establishment Of A Committee charged With Allowing Indians To Vote In Local Elections Which Failed To Happen! On November 3rd 1910 voters elected three commissioners who served terms unexpired but could have continued if reappointed By US Gov't Following Approval Of Constitutional Amendment On November 5th 2010 Appointing Commissioners Only After Election Results Are Known! The Commissioners Were: J C Vaughn (term expired), R B Hames (term expired) & W F Moore Sr (term expired). There Was Now A Board Undertaken To Govern Affairs!: This Is What Eventually Led To Okmulgee County Name Change From Cherokee Nation's 'Okmulgee'ToOklahoma's '. ok
