There is no one answer to the question of what made the first firearms in Okmulgee County, Oklahoma. However,gun parts history in Okmulgee may be traced back to before the Civil War. In 1881, a gunsmith named W.H. Hargrave opened a shop on Main Street in downtown Okmulgee and began making firearms for settlers in the area. Originally, Hargrave’s guns were based upon rifles that had been imported from Europe. His creations were well-received by locals and quickly became popular among farmers and hunters in what was then called “The Frontier of the United States of America.” In 1896, J&L Firearms Company was founded in Okmulgee by John Denny and Jimmy Leddy. The company specialized in selling handguns and shotguns direct to consumers via mail order or over the telephone. At its peak, J&L Firearms produced over 100 pistols per day! By 1907, however, competition from other gun manufacturers led to Leddy’s death at age 40 years old and Denny’s move away from pistol manufacturing altogether into rifle production. Denny’s successors continued J&L Firearms operations until 1938 when it merged with Western Arms Company to form Western Gun Works Incorporated (WGW). WGW continued producing firearms under several different name changes until it was sold to Colt Industries Incorporated (CIO) in 1959! CIO eventually discontinued firearm production within OKMULGEE COUNTY itself; however, some of their products still remain available today!

It was here that cowboy shooters began to popularityized rifles as their primary weapon of choice because they could be ridden into battle with ease on horseback while still remaining deadly accurate at close range.
