Okmulgee is a city in Oklahoma, United States. The population was 61,587 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stephens County. The city is located in the east-central part of the state and straddles both banks of the Arkansas River. Okmulgee was founded in 1881 by George W. Carden and named for Chief Okmulgee, an Apache chief who had been killed by white settlers six years earlier. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century, thanks to its location on a key trading route between Wichita Falls and Tulsa.
