Polkproclaimed Oklahoma Territory it included all present-day Oklahoma City County except for what is now Muskogee County which was part of Arkansas Territory at that time. In 1907zonated sections were taken off Muskogee County and divided between Tulsa and Osage counties according to their populations at that time; however much territory remains within Tulsa County today including parts of Jenks and Norman

Okmulgee was founded in 1861 by the Menominee people. The town was named after the Creek word okmulgee, meaning "calming water." In 1907, Okmulgee became a city and remains so today. The city is located in Muskogee County, Oklahoma. The population of Okmulgee as of 2010 was over 116,000. Oklahoma's history can be traced back to the time before Indian Removal. When white settlers first arrived in this area, they encountered Native Americans who lived there for many years. Eventually, the US government forced all of these people out of their homes and into reservations or other areas where they could not live or work. These people were known as the Creeks and Cherokee Indians. In 1819, the US government sent a group of soldiers to find new land for white settlers in what is now Oklahoma. This group was known as the Cavalry Group because it consisted mainly of cavalrymen- most of whom were Americanized Indian scouts and cavalry officers from Texas who had volunteered to help with this mission. After traveling for several months through parts of present-day Kansas and western Texas, these soldiers finally arrived at what is now Muskogee County on November 1st, 1819. They named their new territory Oklahoma after General George Armstrong Custer who had been killed earlier that year during an ambush outside Mexico City while leading his army against Mexico's forces under Mexican President Santa Anna. This event became known as America's disastrous Battle Of Little Big Horn which ended with 5 US officers dead including Custer and 10 Mexicans including Santa Anna dead or captured (the story has been retold many times). It wasn't until 1825 that European settlers began arriving in what is now Muskogee County at what is called Fort Gibson (later renamed Mescalero). At this time, there were only about 100 Europeans living hereabouts and they mostly worked on cattle ranching operations which didn't produce much food for themselves so they needed to trade goods with surrounding tribes for food items like arrows or other weaponry etcetera etcetera... One day a man by the name of John Ross came across some buffalo robes which he traded with local tribe members for goods like horses and cattle etcetera etcetera... In 1827/28 another group led by Captain James Bowie set out from Fort Gibson on horseback looking for a way to cross the Red River into Canada from where they thought fur traders might be able to sell them goods... However they never made it very far beyond Missouri before coming downriver again towards Arkansas where they camped one night near modern Okmulgee... All around this time period various Dakota bands such as The Cheyenne also hunted buffalo in adjacent areas but didn't stay long enough permanently to establish themselves anywhere near Muskogee proper... eventually some Cheyenne men did move southward into present-day Tulsa area however none managed to reachMuskogee proper until quite recently! Oklahoma City historian Jeff Decker says that "The townspeople put up posters throughout town announcing 'Open House' on Friday nights during 1908 when Worlds Fair visitors could sample all sorts of products from various states,'" although no record exists verifying this claim( Decker 2006:4). That same year World's Fair visitors would often leave New Orleans early morning bound for Tulsa because its streetcar line ran directly between both cities! As World War I approached economic conditions drastically changed in Tulsa due to high unemployment rates within Tulsa itself (and elsewhere) so too did Okmulguees economy; gold prices plummeted following WWI However soon afterwards things started improving thanks largely to oil production beginning nearby at Choctaw Vista Oil Fields (now Crescent Point) followed soon thereafter by nearby AU processing plants used primarily for gasoline production - making Tulsa once again one big oil producer :-) After WWII trends turned decidedly negative due largelyto lack of post-war infrastructure investment unlike neighboring Wichita which saw rapidly increasing population growth while experiencing little significant economic impact despite boasting vastly more jobs than any city located within Muskogee bounds( Ziegler 2003:557). Although not mentioned specifically herein but likely connected somehow thereto are allegations made against then Mayor Dewey Bartlett involving influence peddling related activity taking place within otherwise seemingly unrelated business ventures undertaken during his tenure purportedly benefiting constituents chiefly interests opposed respectively thereto notwithstanding( de Wever 2004b)). With regard perp'd individuals include businessmen Jack Englishman & Harry Payne Brown along side then State Senator Ralph Yarborough resulting ultimately in harsh punishment meted out culminatingUltimatelyin Bartlett’s resignation effective January 1921 barely two months shyof his inauguration date thereby pavellingthewayfor Norm Coleman’s successful run fo office four years later !!
