Binocular usage also increased during the Mexican-American War (1846-48) because many soldiers needed improved Seeing Eye Dogs for target practice as well as battlefield reconnaissance purposes; indeed, one army general exclaimed "the field is too bright for rifles alone" (Ferguson). During World War II, Americans bought over two million pairs of binoculars just like those used during World War I due to their widespread use aboard naval vessels where capture rates ranged from 50% on submarines up to 100% on surface ships (Kriegler). Okmulgee, Oklahoma is a small town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Area. The town was founded by Methodists in 1881 on land owned by Alexander McGillivray. The first post office was established in 1882 and the first general store opened in 1886. Okmulgee grew slowly until 1907 when it began to attract people from nearby towns for its natural resources and easy access to water. In 1911, the city of Tulsa was incorporated and Okmulgee became a part of that city. In the 1920s and 1930s, Okmulgee experienced economic decline due to competition from Tulsa's growing metropolitan area. However, during World War II it supported military operations with supplies and housing for soldiers while Tulsa developed into an important munitions center. After the war, Okmulgee regained some of its lost ground as a bedroom community for Tulsa residents but has seen recent growth as a tourist destination for those looking for history and culture in rural Oklahoma
Oklahoma City was founded in 1907 as the city of Oklahoma Territory. The city became a state in 1907, and was renamed Oklahoma City in 1907. The population of the city grew rapidly during World War II, and by 1950 it had reached 1 million people. In 1968, the city became an independent state, and it has since grown even larger.
