The name "Okmulgee" is Creek Indian and means "place of many trees." The first settler in what is now Okmulgee was James Bledsoe in 1881. He named his place after the creek that ran through it. In 1907, Alfred Fenton bought land in what is now Okmulgee and laid out a town there on November 3rd, 1907. There were only five people living in the town when it was founded- all of whom died soon afterwards from a virulent form of typhoid fever which had just begun to spread through the area at that time. Today most residents are descended from those pioneer settlers who first arrived here more than seventy years ago- both North and South Americans intermarried freely during that time frame! In 1911, J McLaughlin came to this area from Wichita Falls, Texas with his family to help develop oil wells near Ardmore. After several years he sold his interest in these well fields to George Wickersham for $1 million dollars! Wickersham built an oil refinery here which became one of Tulsa’s largest employers during World War II! After World War II ended OKMULGEE experienced rapid growth as businesses poured into the city due to its strategic location as a transportation hub for both east-west traffic and north-south travel within Haskell County. This growth brought new development such as luxury malls (such as Fairfield Place) and restaurants/bars along with increased noise levels which some chose to take advantage of by opening up canalside homes right next door! Today there are over 300 businesses operating within downtownOkmulgeelimitsandinga population size exceeding 2,000 citizens! These businesses generate approximately $50 million annually for our local economy which supports over 100 jobs throughout Tulsa proper alone!
