In the early 1960s, Norman, Oklahoma was home to one of the most notorious incidents in taser history. On October 15, 1962, a group of teenage boys were pepper-sprayed by police officers after vandalizing an officer's car. The boys became unruly and fled the scene. Officers pursuits ensued and fourteen-year-old Norman resident David Hatch was shot and killed as he ran away. The shooting reignited public outcry over tasers and led to a series of reforms in law enforcement in Oklahoma. In 1978, Norman city council passed an ordinance which banned their use against citizens without warrants or probable cause. The ordinance also mandated that officers must first obtain training on using tasers before using them against individuals.

The early settlers had no idea that they would become such an important city today! Today, Norman is known for its shopping malls, professional sports teams (including the Oklahoma City Thunder), high school athletics (including football and baseball), nightlife/bars/restaurants, large convention center/movies theater complex and many other attractions. In fact, nearly one third of all jobs in town are related directly or indirectly to commerce! In addition to its economic importance within Oklahoma County, Norman also boasts cultural significance within the Midwest region due to its rich history and architecture. For example, nearby Tulsa University’s School of Architecture houses some Of America’s leading experts on Queen Anne style architecture dating back to 1878! also noteworthy is First Baptist Church which was built as a Reform synagogue in 1907 (!). Today it is home to several thousand worshipers each year who come from across North America for religious services!
