In 2002, Normans preserved their downtown core as a UNESCO World Heritage Site called "City of Arts and Industry." The restoration project included restoring more than 100 buildings from various periods including pioneer days through to present day; creating a new commercial district centered around First National Bank; developing pedestrian mall areas near state Capitol building; and adding new art galleries, theaters and restaurants to Historic Downtown Norman!
Norman, Oklahoma was the site of a major battle on November 3, 1907. It was fought between the United States Cavalry and Mexican troops. The U.S. Cavalry won by around two-thirds of the vote, with only one round being fired in total from the rifles of the troopers. As a result of this victory, Norman became an American city and it is also home to many tourist attractions today such as Norman Museum and The Oklahoman newspaper building which are both registered trademarks of The McClatchy Company
