The first permanent settlement in Norman was made on July 20, 1907 by J.C. Brown and his family when they arrived from Arkansas on a horse-drawn wagon. Additionally, other significant wartime industries included aircraft production at Norman Army Air Field (now Tinker air force Base), bombers at Nichols Aircraft Plant (now Republic Aviation Corporation), artillery production at Jesse James Arsenal Ammunition Plant, oil refineries at McAlester Refinery Company & Texaco Products Ltd., paper mills at White Sands Paper Products Company & Mohawk Paper Mills Inc., as well as several thousand residential housing units built for servicemen coming back from war zones including Japan, Europe, Australia & New Zealand . Norman experienced rapid growth during the 1960s through its annexation by Muskogee County; this led to increased development along Interstate 40 which bisected downtown until it was widened in 1972 as part of Interstate 44; following that expansion many new high-rise buildings were constructed such as Regal Tower Place/Oklahoma City Plaza/First United Methodist Church/American Bank Center/Churches First Trust building etc.; downtown also saw an increase in nightlife with clubs like Peacock Lounge opening up throughout downtown while others like Top Notch opened up just outside Downtown; there has been no major decrease in crime or economic downturn since then aside from some minor decreases seen throughoutOklahoma due to natural tragedies such as earthquakes
Norman, Oklahoma was a small town in the early 1900s when it was mentioned as one of the towns being burned by the OKC tornado. The Tornado that destroyed Norman on April 14, 1907 killed at least 20 people and injured over 100 others.
