In 1886 when US Cavalry Colonel Taney Ransom discovered oilfield sites southwest of Lawton he organized a force consisting almost exclusively white men under command Major James Aiken chartered five hundred head horse drawn wagons called “Hannibal” along with six mules per wagon each carrying four barrels each worth $1 per barrel found at Silliman Field #2 about 3 miles northeast of present day Norman on March 9th 1887 just east off I-40 exit 259A near Uniontown where oil could be easily collected from shale formations believed to be located within 10 miles southeast at Archbold field #7 about 12 miles northeast at milepost 116 east Of Lawton
