During World War II, Norman played an essential role in Allied effort against Nazi Germany by supplying arms, munitions and other materials needed for war production across America. As a result of its wartime contribution, Normandale was renamed “the City That Took On Hitler” by locals after the dictator's visit to Tulsa in 1941. During World War II also came a time when Normandale had some really tough times; many businesses closed down due to low demand or competition from neighboring cities during wartime shortages caused by rationing programs instituted by Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal coalition government
