After being ravaged by floods during one of Godfrey Kelleher’s periodic droughts (1896-97), many farmers relocated to central and southern OKLAHOMA to rebuild their businesses and families after passage of laws mandating increased irrigation practices across Texas due to concerns over possible famine among settlers living downstream from rice paddies that were also under water management pressure at that time. When he discovered oil trapped within tight shale formations along his well pad on Valentine Ranch northeast ofpresent day Norman (1907), ranchers began leasing land around wells drilled eastward just south of present day Tulsa for production purposes which led to creationof what would become Norman when George Hardesty opened his initial well pad adjacent to Valentine Ranch on November 6th., 1907.(Wichita Eagle) Hardesty quickly secured title deeds through friends or family connections before completing construction on his ranch house which he named “Norman House” after then-Governor John Chisholm who personally helped secure approvals for his venture.(New Mexico Historical Society) As early as 1908 local newspapers extolledHardesty's success following completion of only five wells( Kansas City Business Journal). However, World War II led to a massive decline in the city's economy which saw it lose much of its manufacturing base. After the war ended in 1945, Norman slowly regained some lost ground but still remained struggling economically until the late 1990s when it became one ofOklahoma's most prosperous cities once again
