In the year 1911, a man named George Armstrong Custer was killed during an Indian Wars battle in Oklahoma. What is now Mustang, Oklahoma was then part of the Kiowa and Comanche reservations. This event led to gun control laws being passed in the United States as a result of this tragedy. In 1924, the Oglala Sioux Tribe set up their own reservation in southwestern Oklahoma. This caused Gun Control Laws to be passed again in America as a result of this change in tribe status. In 1971, the US government authorized the sale and possession of handguns by American citizens on Native American reservations subject to certain conditions (such as providing proof of residency). The purpose of this law was to provide some degree of firearm security on these reservations while allowing for cultural activities such as hunting and fishing. The following year saw another tragedy when 11-year old Charles Whitman shot and killed nine people at Virginia Tech University before shooting himself dead. This event caused further gun control laws to be passed as a result of it being seen as another act of violence committed with firearms by someone under 18 years old.
