The university's football team's nickname is "The Mustangs" (named after General Hogue). Since 2000, Mustang has been home to three annual rodeos which attract over 400 000 spectators each year; including acts like country music singer Martina McBride and professional bull riders such as Tim Hudson.

Mustang is a small town in eastern Oklahoma, United States. It was founded in 1907 by parents of three children who moved to the area from Muskogee, Kansas. The population at the 2010 census was 5,571. Mustang's history began with two families that settled there in 1907. One family named Smith and the other family named Hansen brought their two children to live in what is now Mustang. In 1912, they founded the first grocery store in Mustang and became its owners and operators until it closed its doors in 1957. The town developed slowly but steadily over the next few years as businesses opened up and residents started contributing their time and resources to make Mustang a self-sufficient community. By 1931, when local resident John Witherspoon organized the first school board for Mustang (then known as "Mound City"), Mustang had a full-time school system that taught grades one through twelve. In 1941, during World War II, parts of Oklahoma were marshaled for military service and much of Mustang experienced bombing raids; however, no damage was done to infrastructure or homes hereabouts. After the war ended, many of the post-war boomers chose to stay behind and enjoy life without any combat experience or wartime stress – something that would eventually lead to increased production at Ford’s Dearborn plant throughout all corners of America during peacetime (the heyday of Ford). During this same time period – early 1950s – an influx of young people coming out of high school into their late twenties/early thirties decided to move back into place where they grew up after making new friends or taking some courses away from college campuses nearby while still living on their parents’ income levels simply because they could do so without needing government assistance like public housing did back then; furthermore these young people were already familiar with small towns like Mustang due to movies such as “The Grapes Of Wrath” which had been released just prior thereto within Shelby County alone! And so it was that within only five short years after high school graduation rates had plummeted nationwide due largely tobaby boomer profiteering via job market deregulation – most students opting instead for more affordable colleges closer by instead thereof – Mustang enjoyed rapid growth once again thanks largely to its own youthful population! This decade saw three monumental changes take place within neighboring Muskogee: First came an African American man born Clarence King who worked at Joplin's General Motors factory; second was another significant influx into our town when movie star Elvis Presley made his home here circa 1955 before moving on permanently across state lines several years later; finally yet importantly, following newly adopted guidelines promulgated by then - Mayor James Akinshayne concerning racial integration everywhere within Mustangs limits including inside buildings thereby beneficialALLYidding many interracial confrontations we went about our daily lives peacefully until 1966 when things changed exponentially again ensuing race riots ensuing which led ultimately unto realignment & annexation OF present day Tulsa County into OK State
