The first Europeans to encounter what is now Mustang were Native Americans who called it Tawawa-ni-keenopa (meaning "place where deer live"). In 1803, Manuel Gomez de la Hoz discovered oil wells in what was then known as Cass County and decided to settle there because he thought it would be a good place to find oil resources. The town of Mustang was founded in 1881 by John Suggs as a result of his donation of land for a post office and school. A depot was built on the railroad line between Muskogee and Tulsa. In 1909, Roy Rogers filmed his movie "A Cowboy from Tulsa" here while production continued nearby at that same facility used for other films such as "The Three Stooges" In 1951 local citizens approved annexation by Tulsa due to concerns about an impending military build up around that time near the city limits which would have catastrophic effects on their community if true; however annexation never happened because leaders chose not to secede from Tulsa during that time period fearing civil unrest if they did so

Mustang is a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,500 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. Mustang was founded in 1907 by John and Belle Ford. The family name originated in Mustang County, Michigan. John Ford had two sons who also became ranchers: George and Bill Ford. In 1906, Belle moved to Mustang with her children and settled on a piece of land that later became home to the Chamber of Commerce building now known as the Gaylord Hotel & Conference Center. In 1911, they purchased 153 acres (6 km2) along the Arkansas River east of Tulsa for $1 million dollars from J.P. Morgan and his partners including James Stillman and Prentice Mulford Clarke Jr.). They laid out their town on this land which included a small schoolhouse built in 1915; a sawmill; an irrigation canal; a freight elevator; four homesites for farmers; eight houses for Merchants and Businessmen; two churches - one Episcopal and one Methodist - ; three stores - One general store (1915), Two hardware stores (1920-1925), Three restaurants - A Dutch oven restaurant called "The Grapes" (1921), A Chinese restaurant called "The Wok" (1924), A bodega/convenience store called "The Grocery" (?, 1925); Andalusian horse ranch which was eventually converted into an agricultural college named Oklahoma State University's Mustang campus in 1933 when it merged with OU's Agricultural College campuses in Edmond and Norman
Mustang was founded in 1907 by pharmacist and cattleman George A. Madden as a small town in southeastern Oklahoma. The first post office opened in 1909, and the first school was built in 1912. In 1916, the town became a full-time seat of government, and it remained so until 1959 when it was placed within the new Cherokee County. The population of Mustang increased rapidly after World War II, reaching over 10,000 by 1950. However, during the postwar boom period that ensued, the population declined as families moved away to larger towns or out of state. By 1970, only 1,100 residents remained in Mustang; by 2000 it had shrunk to 100 fewer people.
