Mustang experienced another moment of fame when General George Custer died there during an engagement against Sioux Indians in October 1894. A large gathering of local citizens paid their respects at his grave later that year and a military parade was held in memory of him and other prominent members of the army who had fought in that war. In addition to historical events, Mustang also plays an important role within Oklahoma culture as a site where summer campers visit during summertime; where Oklahomans hold amateur theatrical performances featuring professional actors; and where Native Americans gather each fall to celebrate Tailor Creek Festival (an annual event).

The first post office was established in 1909, and the first store was opened in 1911. By 1914, the population of Mustang had reached 100 people. The paper mill that operated in Mustang until 1958 also produced paper products such as envelopes and ballots for local elections. In 1966, the last remaining part of the original town – its school and grocery stores – were closedtered due to economic reasons. Today, there is no evidence that any living people lived or worked within reach of Mustang during its heyday before World War II began; however, there are several ghost towns located within driving distance of Tulsa which may have been influenced by or associated with Mustang.
