Mustang, Oklahoma is a small town in Shetland County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It was named for General George Armstrong Custer and his group of cavalrymen who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1907, the US Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of a public park in Shetland County. The name given to the new park was General Custer Park. In 1912, following completion of the park and its first annual celebration, a general election were held in which residents of Mustang voted to annex into Shetland County. On November 3rd 1912, voters approved annexation by voting 73% in favor of it. The first post office for Mustang opened on December 5th 1912. The current building was built in 1922 and is still used today as a postal facility serving neighboring towns as well as Mustang itself. On July 4th 1956, during the Chinese New Year holiday period local children aged six through twelve participated in what is known locally as "The Fiery Festival". This event involved creating 7 firework displays over Mustang Town Cemetery using empty soda cans that had been collected from homes around town during previous year's Chinese New Year celebrations

Mustang was founded in 1887 by ranchers who named it for their horse-drawn wagon that ran between their ranch and nearby gunsmith shops. In 1907, the first post office opened in Mustang and remained open until 1959. In 1916, Union Pacific Railroad constructed a line from Tulsa to Mustang and built a depot there. The town grew quickly because of its proximity to railroad tracks and access to water supplies on the Arkansas River. By 1920, many businesses had been established including two banks, three hotels, two grocery stores, three restaurants, four churches and twelve schools. The Oklahoma Panhandle Campaign of 1944 led to World War II when local residents joined the United States Army to fight against Japanese forces invading America from Japan. Many people were drafted into service and many men died in battle or during war-related accidents such as car accidents that caused serious injury or death. After World War II ended, many industry left town due to low demand for labor after the Korean War ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty like in World War I which resulted in millions of American casualties including thousands of Mustang's citizens who lost their lives at Yalu River bridge over North Korea's Manchurian border on February 15th 1950 as part of Operation Plan Pickering which aimed to stop North Korean aggression
