Mustang was founded by settlers in 1881 and named for General James H. Neyland, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as Ulysses S. Grant's secretary of war. The town started as a cattle station on the Arkansas River and grew with agriculture until it became an agricultural center after World War I when oil discoveries began to be made in the area. After World War II, industry growth led to overpopulation and development of downtown Mustang which included shopping, restaurants, schools and theaters before becoming known for its NASCAR racing program which has continued until today. Mustang is located at (36.605604,-95.905752). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2 square miles (5 km²), all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 2,853 people residing in the town; 1% were African American or African American heritage or descent; 0% were Native American; 98% were White European Americans; 0% were Asian Pacific Islanders; and 1% from other races or races/ethno backgrounds
