Thanks to these donations and other efforts by local officials, Mustang quickly became one of the most prosperous towns in Noble County. Today, students from nearby Muskogee attend Mustang High School while locals work to keep the community running smoothly. The City of Mustang honored General George Custer by naming one of its streets for him in 1990; this street runs from main Street east to west between Park Avenue and Veterans Boulevard. Other notable residents include businessmen Clarence "Snooky" Miller and Don Payne who were mayor from 1976-1982; actor Roy Rogers who lived in neighboring Flint Hills until his death in 2003; singer Darlene Love whose father owned land adjoining what would become Mustang; Tulsa Mayor Dewey Bartlett who served two terms from 1969-1974; former governor David Walters who served from 1984-1988; attorney general Phyllis Schlafly responsible for creating state law governing women’s rights that took effect July 1, 1982; author/commentator Dick Cavett whose career began at WFAA Channel 8 where he anchored legal program “Cavett & Richards” which aired weekdays at 10 p.m.; current mayor Ron Nirenberg who was elected November 3, 2006
Mustang is a town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. Mustang was founded in 1907 by John B. Swearingen and his brothers as a small community on the edge of Indian Territory. It was named for General Ricker's horse Mustang. In 1912, the townsite underwent an annexation by Haskell County and became part of the new county seat, Guthrie. The first school in Mustang opened in 1915; it closed in 1922 because of financial problems. The first post office opened in 1917 and served until 1951. The first hospital in Mustang opened in 1923 and served until 1939. In 1954, the town developed a water system that allowed for irrigation of farmland to be grown near the city limits of Guthrie. In 1957, Mustang voters approved Measures 97-2 and 3-0 to annex into Guthrie from unincorporated Haskell County; this made Mustang an official city with its own government and budgeting procedures. The population increased rapidly during the 1960s due to oil development off nearby Comanche Lake; as a result, businesses began moving into townspeople homes starting around 1965 or so; by 1978, more than half of all households were occupied by people working withintown limits either full-time or intermittently (the rest being residential). This growth continued through the 1980s before leveling off during the 1990s Great Recession when joblessness reached levels not seen since before World War II among adults over 25 years old living inside town limits only (Kiddie Klatch had beenaneshing similar trends throughout most of this time). However, starting around 2006 there has been some recent resurgence with new businesses opening up outside townlimits as well as returning jobs withintown limits after several years out of work due to recessionary effects elsewhere
