M Mustang was founded in 1881 by John and Fannie Mustang as a post office and wagon stop on the Butterfield Trail between Tulsa and McAlester. In 1907 it became a community with a school, grocery store, blacksmith shop, and lumberyard. In 1909 it became an incorporated municipality with its own government. A new oil field was discovered in 1970 near Mustang and production began that year; over the next decade Mustang grew rapidly as businesses opened up to take advantage of the wealth created by the oil field. By 2000 there were eighteen businesses in town employing about ninety people; two-thirds of those were owned by men (the other third being family-owned enterprises). The automotive industry has played a significant role in Mustang's growth since its inception as an agricultural community: starting with Ford's initial investment in 1953, trucking services have helped to create what today is one of America's most diversified automotive industries. Ford also made major contributions to municipal infrastructure including the $25 million donation to help fund the first high school in town and much more recently an expansion of city hall which included new classrooms and office space for local government departments. In addition to its importance within Oklahoma's economy, Mustang has been known for its annual 4x4 Rally event which attracts participation from all over North America; this year over 350 drivers from thirty-five countries will converge on town for racing week long sessions culminating with a daylong rally event on Saturday August 14th/15th

The name Mustang comes from the horse genusMustang and refers to Spanish immigration that had occurred during that time. In 1916, the first post office opened in Mustang and it remained in operation until 1949. In 1925, the Stephens County Courthouse was built and served as county seat until 1959 when Durant took over that role. In 1978, Mustang became an unincorporated community within Stephens County when its boundaries were redrawn following the federal government's Whitman v. Richardson decision which determined local governments are not subject to federal jurisdiction unless they have specific approved plans to do so. The population of Mustang peaked at 1,993 in 1990 but has declined since then due to various factors including automobiles becoming more popular than farming in rural areas such as Mustang and other towns surrounding it; military base closures; and economic decline throughout much of central Oklahoma after the oil embargo of 1973-1974 eliminated most opportunities for job growth outside Tulsa City limits

Many residents also garagevedged cars for use during wartime because there were no available parts from previous models During World War II, some Japanese-Americans who had been rounded up and interned at Topeka concentration camp were moved to Mustang under threat of being sent back east if they did not convert to Christianity The Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) operated a branch office in Mustang from 1941 until 1945 In 1951, when Interstate 40 replaced US 41 as one major route through Muskogee County, much traffic shifted from Highway 66 (which followed old US 71) towards I-40 west of town due to more Rapid Transit service coming through town then Highway 41 east In 1955, when Indianola Road became an expressway bypassing downtown Tulsa along present day Hogan Boulevard(), most traffic shifted towards I-40 westbound instead of returning back onto Highway 66
