After World War I, there were no significant growth rates until the late 1920s when a new irrigation system was developed in nearby Haskell County and then more manufacturing took place in Muskogee. In 1930, there were still only 25 people living in Muskogee but it had a population of about 500 people by 1940. Growth resumed during World War II with factories supplying war materials to the military and postwar development led to a doubling of the city's population from 1960 to 1980. However, since 2000 market demand has been reducing overall economic activity which has resulted in declines in housing prices and jobs
