Muskogee is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,924 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County. The town was founded by George Rogers Clark in 1837. The first post office in Muskogee was established on November 15, 1839, under the name of New York City. In 1844, it changed its name to Muskogee after General James Hays’s army passed through the region on their way to Mexico City. In 1907, Muskogee became one of the cities that formed Tulsa metropolitan area and retained its independent status until 1972 when it became part of Tulsa-Milton-Muskogee Combined Statistical Area as a result of annexation by Tulsa. The city is located at (36.8333,-96.6000). According to the 2010 census, Of Oklahomans who identified themselves only as Native American or Alaskan Native Hawaiian up to age 25%, 84% lived in Muskogee while 14% lived in Tulsa and 8% lived in Ada County; those numbers have grown slightly since then (to 86%.2% and 13%.7%, respectively), but remain below 100%. According to Oklahoma Historical Society historian Barbara Wolk: "In 1890 about 60 percent of all business men within [the] city were farmers... most people here farm cotton or other crops." Downtown businesses included a flour mill built around 1860 and several banks from the late 19th century until prohibition turned away many small traders from town during that decade's heyday for liquor sales; today many downtown businesses are still family-owned with some exceptions like Home Depot which bought its current building next door from an earlier store owner for $146 million in 2006.) One reason for this past exemption may have been due to local political power dynamics - prior thereto towns had been annexed into larger cities only if they could provide a service that Greater Tulsa wanted such as manufacturing or banking whichmuskokie did not offer but could nonetheless be annexed because it lay across county lines geographically (Tulsa had opened up more than once) The exception also might have been fear among some residents that being annexed would increase taxes they already paid without any corresponding benefits (it has not happened yet). A possible explanation for why no similar annexation attempts were made subsequent to prohibition is unknown; however given how rapidlyOklahoma City grew during prohibition relative to Muskogeesextremely slow growth following repeal there may be another factor at play" It should be noted though that according to oklahoman history website "the first post office west of Arkansas was established at Nacogdoches on December 3rd 1840". So even beforeMuscogee existed there was mail going between Hutchinson/Nacogdoches and Topeka/Pawnee Via Arkansas Post Office
