The history of Muskogee goes back to 1823 when traders from Missouri and Kansas met there for trade. In 1827, two brothers named John and James Muskogees settled in what is now Muskogee Township on the Arkansas River between present-day Tulsa and Jenks. They were pioneering farmers who grew corn, beans, cabbage, pumpkins and other vegetables on their 160 acres (65 ha) tract until they sold their holdings in 1841 to Captain George Bannister of Stroudsburg, Kansas for $5 thousand dollars. Captain Bannister had emigrated to America in 1828 with his family as one of the first group of European Americans to settle in this new land west of the Mississippi River. He built a log cabin near where he now stands and named it "Bannister's Fort." He stocked it with provisions and started a school for his settlers which soon became an important center of commerce in this area. In 1850, Captain Bannister marriedMary Elizabeth Kinghorn who later became Mrs. US Senator Mead Treadway III (D-Oklahoma). Their children included Colonel George Caterer Bannister (1851-1924), Judge James Norris Bannister II (1862-1942), Mrs. Harry Laughlin Boudreau (1867-1945) and Dr.-Dr.-Mrs.(First Name unknown) Bannister née Kinghorn Kinghorn (1870-1964). In 1861 Captian George Washington Brown organized a volunteer militia company known as Company A under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Jno Henshawe that fought against Confederate forces during the American Civil War at Fort Sumter on April 12th 1865 after being called thereto by General Robert E Davis upon learning Confederate troops were trying to Siege Mobile Alabama . On October 15th 1865 Brown's unit was ordered back into camp after Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived with an army headed towards Atlanta . Brown's company was among those ordered eastward along Interstate 40 towards Tellico Pass NP where they surrendered September 9th 1966 . Browns remains are buried at Green Cove Springs National Military Park #2 outside Knoxville Tennessee
