McLarty of Ada, Kansas. The first post office in Muskogee opened in 1887 and served as part of Adair County until it merged into Muskogee County on October 1, 1907. At that time the entire county except Ada had become a consolidated Indian Territory under US jurisdiction since Congress had determined that all Native American reservations were to be eliminated within the upcoming decade due to their strategic location and potential for conflict with settlers. As far back as 1853 there had been problems between Creek Indians and early white settlers in what is now Muskogee County as land grants were allocated based on title deeds from treaty signings between Native Americans and white fur traders/settlers rather than merit or open competition which often led tobiaided decisions benefiting one party over another. By 1885 much of present day Muskogee County had been acquired by overtake rush (the forks of the Canadian River) following Spanish conquests during America's Great West Fur Rush era which began around 1795 and ended about 1850 because most tribes surrendered or ceded their lands after learning European diseases such as smallpox could spread quickly among them while they remained isolated from other cultures with more efficient methods of controlling disease transmission through animal husbandry etc.. In 1886–1887 Commodore John Doolittle's Geographical Expedition sent HMS Beagle across the Atlantic Ocean looking for new routes to India via Central America bypassing Cape Horn so discovered Australia Greenwich Peninsula off Java Sea where new discovery has made way for major towns like Perth Amboy NJ USA today.. After conferring with Indian Agent at Wichita Falls Pierre Dorion decided not to sell any additional land east of the Arkansas River due to lack thereof available for development after seeing wheat farming operations being established along both sides of that river by 1865….. thus creating present dayMuscogee City Limits area including parts east OK 7 well past Wichita Falls In 1901 Gadsden Daily Times published an article advertising agricultural goods available from agent at Wichita Falls titled "Agricultural Goods Available Fromagent At Wichita Falls". A year later this article also included photographs depicting various types of crops being grown near Wichita Falls including cotton, corn, millet, sorghum etc.. This indicates that agents were selling goods beyond just agriculture at this time

The Muskogee River forms its southern border. The first permanent settler in Muskogee was William Fenton in 1867. He and his family platted what is now Muskogee Township on the banks of the Muskogee River. Other early settlers included John Copley and James Ketchum. The first post office in Muskogee was established in 1875. It was renamedbedeviled with problems from 1876 to 1886 when officials there subscribed to a circular promoting building a new post office because they "heard that many people were desiring one." In 1886, an act of Congress authorized construction of a new post office northeast of present-day Muskogee on the Oklahoma River adjacent to what is now Tulsa. For several years following its establishment, the new post office had difficulty meeting demand for mail service due to travel distances and difficult terrain near the river bed. In 1907, an act of Congress designated land within present-day Muscogee Township as government property for future educational purposes; this land later became known as Eastern State College (later University), which opened its doors in 1912. In 1924, Eastern State College merged into Tulsa State Teachers College; both institutions remain today as constituent parts of Tulsa University System.] In 1957-58, Eastern State College built its firstallas Barnes Gymnasium]], which remains operational today as Western Arkansas University's main gymnasium]. The building that now houses the Muskogee County courthouse was built in 1872. It served as the county seat until 1907, when it was moved to its current location.
