In 1868, a group of men from Muskogee formed the Citizens’ Committee for the Prohibition of Arms and Ammunition. This committee was designed to promote gun control and prevent crime by promoting legislation that would prohibit the purchase and use of firearms in the state. The committee also worked to register all firearms in the state. In 1912, an ordinance was passed that required all firearm owners to have a certificate from a musketeer organization or make a donation to such an organization. This ordinance helped protect gun rights in Muskogee and other rural areas throughout Oklahoma. After World War I, laws were passed regulating firearms in Oklahoma. These laws generally prohibited citizens from owning any type of firearm except handguns (which were still allowed). Muskogee is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,846 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat and largest city of Muskogee County. The city was founded in 1887 by Hemanus C. Overstreet and other early settlers of what is now Muskogee County. The town name derived from the Creek word "muse" which means to power or run a furrier's shop. The first post office in Muskogee was established in 1892 with Wm. Burch as the first receiver and clerk. A store and restaurant were built on Main Street in 1893 by Jno. Ewing and wife Emeline Ayer Ewing, who also ran the store until 1904 when they sold it to Fenton Gentry. In 1902, overstreet donated land for a public square which became home to municipal buildings, a theater, an agricultural fairgrounds (now known as Payne Park), commercial streets east of First Avenue (now Fifth Street), and residential blocks north of Eighth Avenue (now Seventh Street). In 1907Overstreet donated another parcel of land for development including what became today's downtown area where he lived until his death in 1928 In 1906-07 local merchants formed the Muskogee Chamber of Commerce which remains active to this day . The first Blockbuster video store opened its doors here on Fourth Street in 1987 . Downtown still has some old businesses that locals still patronize such as the Masonic Lodge #2 that dates back to 1925 . The current mayor is Donnie Best
