This change was spurred on by new legislation passed by the state government which mandated citizens carry licenses for their own protection against law enforcement officials should they engage them conflictively or provide aid or assistance during a crime spree ( such as highway robbery). Muskogee, Oklahoma is a city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The population was 46,824 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Muskogee County and one of its five cities. It is also the county seat of Muskogee County. The city is located on the Arkansas River and has a total area of 31 square miles (87 km²). The name "Muskogee" comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "place where there are no buffalo." A post office called Muskogee was established in 1868, and remained in operation until 1899. The first settler to arrive in what is now Muskogee County was Nicholas Hodge, who arrived in 1872 with his family from Illinois. The town of Muskogee began as a small trading post on the Arkansas River near present-day Fort Gibson. In 1881, James Waddy founded Waddy's General Store here; this store became one of the most important commercial centers during earlyStage developmentofthe area around Tulsa and Oklahoma City. By 1907, Waddy had developed a large grain elevator that facilitated shipping goods upriver to Tulsa and other towns on the main stem ofthe Arkansas River system. In 1911, Irvin Sitton opened General Motors' world Headquarters for marketing Chevrolet cars across America at 4500 N First Street - just south of downtown Muskaooge today! That same year, Sitton also built what is now Stroud Field Stadium - home to both OKC Thunder basketball teamsand local high school football programs until it was replaced by Kenny Chesney Stadium in 2002!Several major businesses have operated in downtown Muskaooge over time: KFC since 1967; Shell since 1978; BP since 1990; JCPenney from 1997 thru 2007; Plano Supply CoOp from 1984 thru 1992; Home Depot from 1989 thru 1996; Denny's Restaurant & Brewery from 1967 thru 1988.; Pinnacle Drilling Company from 1976 thru 1979.; And several others which we can't mention here because they've all been closed/ moved or merged into larger operations elsewhere! Downtown redevelopment continues apace with several new buildings being constructed recently including: Live Oak Center for Health Care Services (formerly known as Streamwood Place), Northwest Nazarene University School of Medicine (former Methodist Hospital), Artisan MetalCrafters Inc., Oneida Bank plaza restaurant & gift shop (opened late 2016), and many more! A recent attraction within downtown Muskaooge is 'Prairie Lights', an LED light show fundraiser event held annually at Prairielake Park located adjacent to downtownMuskaooge that features entertainers such as country music artist Trace Armstrong along with food vendorsBolivian Coffee Cartel & Moreland BBQ Pit BBQ followed by live music by Trace Armstrong Post Show prejudging starts at 7 pm Admission $10 per person

The first recorded mention of Muskogee was made by French explorer and trader Pierre-Etienne de La Salle in 1696 while on his way to Texas. In 1881, Indian Agent George Armstrong Smith visited Muskogee and found it to be an excellent trading post for goods brought down the Arkansas River by prospectors. By 1886, Muskogee had become an important center for commerce inOklahoma Territory. In 1907, Fort Riley was established as a military installation to support the efforts of Indian Removal Act proponent General James Aller during the Cherokee Nation's fight for independence from Georgia. In 1912, during World War I,Muskogee became an important staging ground for troop movements around Tulsa and other areas across Oklahoma Territory. After the war ended, most soldiers left Tulsa and moved back into Muskegon County where they began their new lives. As part ofOklahoma's effort to attract businesses and jobs to the area after World War II, Muskegee developed into one of the largest cities within Oklahoma County limits with over 60 business districts throughout downtown area alone at one point during the 1960s and 1970s. However, since then economic conditions have steadily declined in both downtowns as well as wider parts of town leading many residents today to prefer smallerscale activities such as farming or ranching rather than big box stores or professional services such as law enforcement or health care providers
The Muskogee area was first settled by the Wichita and Pawnee cultures. The United States Census of 1881 counted 1,851 residents in the Muskogee County seat, which is now Falls City. In 1907, the town of Muskogee was platted as a cotton gin and post office on the east side of the Creek River. The town had a population of only fifty people when it was founded. The towns of Tulsa and Hawarden were founded nearby in 1889 and 1905, respectively. Both towns grew rapidly after becoming Tyson oil production centers during World War I. However, due to Oklahoma’s prohibition laws, both towns declined in popularity after prohibition ended. In 1938, the city of Tulsa built an air strip on what is nowMuskogee Boulevard for use by military planes flying to Japan during World War II. After the war ended, the Air Force withdrew from Tulsa and moved its operations to Muskogee instead; however, the airport remained in use until it closed in 1977. Today's Falls City is home to some 200 businesses including twenty-five banks and eight credit unions. It also has a small park named after President George Washington that includes a visitor center with exhibits about his life and times as well as a replica house he lived in while governor of Virginia
