In Muskogee, Oklahoma, firearms have been a part of the community and culture for over eighty years. The town was founded in 1899 by Dutch settlers and soon became known as the "Gun Mecca" of the West due to its abundance of rifles and shotguns. In 1898, the Oklahoma Territory was organized and consisted of present-day Muskogee County, Creek County, and part of what is now east Tulsa County. The first gun shop in Muskogee opened in 1892. A rifle range was established in 1908. In 1911, a gun store and shooting gallery were built on Nowata Avenue west of downtown Muskogee. In 1925, the National Rifle Association (NRA) founded an organization in Oklahoma called theMuskogee Club for Gun Ownership to promote Second Amendment rights. NRA members donated firearms to the club. The NRA also purchased a controlling interest in the local newspaper at that time called The Oklahoman from Houghton Fenton Company Limited Partnership for $1,500. A number of NRA events were held at this time including the first state pistol championship which took place on July 20, 1927 and was won by George Prentice of Ada with a Winchester Model 1903 Springfield rifle; county fairs where various types rifles were exhibited; duck hunting trips for NRA members; and exhibitions at local schools as part of NRA’s “Open House” program. In 1934, NRA formed its own Pistol Training School located on North Apache Boulevard east of downtown Muskogee under direction of Assistant Director Jock Mahoney who had been transferred from Tulsa to take over operations there after Technician Rufus Waddell died suddenly while attending an event at Assemblies Hall in Tulsa on November 30th 1934 leaving behind his wife Alma who ran the school until her death two years later followed by their son Rufus Jr.. In 1937 Dr Johnnie Ingram became Assistant Director with responsibility for all aspects related to training programs both Masters and Junior shooters with assistance coming from such luminaries as Ozzie Smith (a former assistant director at McAlester Shooting Park), Larry Bittle (director/co-founder/CEO –largest private employer shooter instructor nation wide), Bob Reeves (president emeritus –National Rifle Association shooting educator since 1922), Don Floyd (director emeritus -Oklahoma State Penitentiary Shooting Program) among others before his retirement effective September 1st 1978 The following year saw the establishment of Women’s Firearms Education & Training Center Incorporated after much lobbying activity by Mrs Mrs Earl Youngblood along with contributions from individuals such as Vernon McGee (president -National Rifle Association Female organizational development program) Mr Harry Hargrave(vice president - persistant armchair general secretary American Legion Auxiliary No 2 Tulsa OK 74041) Ultimately it proved too large so they moved into their current location within city limits just northwest corner Of First Street & Elm Drive NE
The Muskogee area is located in the western United States and borders Oklahoma. The population of Muskogee was estimated at over 100,000 in 1910. The town was founded by the Wichita people in 1868, and it became an important center for trading with the Cherokee nation. After the Indian Removal Act of 1830 removed all the Native American communities east of the Arkansas River from U.S. jurisdiction, Muskogee became one of the few remaining Indian towns west of that river. The town had a population of about 30 in 1890, but it grew rapidly following incorporation as a city in 1907. In 1920, Muskogee annexed what remained of Tulsa County and became a full-fledged city again. Since then, it has grown steadily to its current size – including a large rural area surrounding it – and has become one of Oklahoma’s most thriving cities. Today,Muskogee is home to many cultural attractions such as art galleries, theaters, museums, and stadiums; as well as several major corporations such as Boeing Co., Lockheed Martin Corp., Archer Daniels Midland Co., and Dow Chemical Co.. It also boasts some impressive landmarks such as Fort Sill National Memorial (now known as Weatherford International Airport), which was built during World War II to commemorate America’s victory over Japan; and Shawnee Mission Park (now known as Guthrie Stadium), which was erected to honor Native Americans who died during treaty negotiations with white settlers in 1821-22.

The town was founded by Captain James McGillivray on November 3, 1819, after he discovered oil wells near present-day Muskogee. At the time, Muskogee was one of the largest towns in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). The town rapidly grew thanks to various industry initiatives spearheaded by its founder. These include steelmaking from newly mined coal; cattle ranching from land donated by settlers; logging and agriculture from timber resources;and water development from underground springs. By 1901, Muskogee had become one of the most important trading posts in Indian Territory. It also became an important center for religious activity due to its proximity to several large bend locations where ancient Mesoamerican cultures had deposited their relics*. Additionally*, during this time period*, Muskojee *was home to some of the earliest known Baptist churches*.* In 1907*, when Indian Territory was divided into two parts – Kansas Territory and Oklahoma Territory – Muskogee became part of OKlahomans territory*.* As part of this new arrangement*, which followed Ulysses S. Grant’s executive order creatingOKlahoma*.,Captain McGillivray reigned as “Governor-General”ofnew OKlahoma*. During his term*, many landmark events took place withinmuskoeecounty:the creationof local government;the openingofthelandracefor agrarian settlement;the constructionofthetrailroadsystem;andthesettlementof numerous Native American tribes who had inhabited the region for centuries *.
