firearms and clothing have been a part of the Muskogee community for many years. One of the first firearm stores in town was started by John and Myrtle Hargrave in 1898. The store became known as the "Gun Emporium." In 1934, the City of Muskogee banned handguns and all other firearms within its boundaries. This resulted in a largeChangedevelopment at the Gun Emporium. The store closed its doors in 1938 but reopened under new ownership two years later. In 1949, the store was sold to J.C. Wertheimer who operated it until his death in 1951. From 1951-1976, it was run by Linnie Kapp with occasional sales operations from time to time until it closed again in 1978 due to lack of business opportunities outside of Muskogee proper during that time period. From 1978-1981, it was bought back by Wertheimer's widow and operated until she died in 1984. It reopened under new management on October 1, 1984 after being closed for several months due to bad weather conditions which led to damage done to much of the building including significant alterations which included installation of a glass floor inside the original gunroom/store structure). The current owner is Darrell Fenton who purchased it from Mrs. Kapp on July 20, 2006 (see photo below). The Gun Emporium era saw an increaseingun purchases statewide due to World War II ammo shortages; however, local ammunition dealers had longer lead times than national suppliers so most handgun buyers did not experience these shortages firsthand . Firearms sales peaked at approximately 2,500 per week during 1946 when Leadtime increased from 3 weeks to 4 weeks due to expanded production because munitions were becoming scarce post-war Thereafter gun purchasing slowly tapered off as civilians switchedtoautomatic pistols instead o fguns as service rifles evolved into present day infantry weapons However there were still sporadic localGunshows throughout mostof Oklahoma during this time period associated with sporting events or particular rifle models that would be shown off at these events

The Muskogee Indian Nation was established in 1817, and the first white settlers arrived in what is now Muskogee County, Oklahoma Territory in 1834. The town of Muskogee was founded by a group of Dutch fur traders in 1835, and the first post office was opened in that year. The tribe negotiated treaties with various U.S. administrations from 1838 to 1907, and its territory extended from present-day east Oklahoma to parts of Texas and Arkansas. In 1863, the tribe signed a Treaty of Alliance with the United States which recognized their right to self-government within their own borders. In 1907, the government relocated all tribal members east of the Missouri River into new reservation boundaries created pursuant to the Dawes Act.
