During World War II, the town became an important manufacturing center due to aircraft production at nearby Choctaw Air Force Base and shipbuilding at Choctaw Naval Shipyard (now Perry Shipyards). Because of its importance within Tulsa County and military production throughout much of postwar America, Moore experienced rapid growth after World War II ended; by 1970 it had reached its current size with a population of 10,500 residents.[2] In 1969, construction began on what would become one of the largest shopping malls ever built when Moses Epps Development Company erected the Town Center Plaza Shopping mall across from downtown Tulsa on I-40 near Union Station;[3] however it failed to take off commercially and closed down two years later following allegations that management withheld payments owed to vendors[4][5] In 1984,[6] developers purchased all remaining land for $10 million making Moore's Town Center their new focal point;[7] however profits were low due to competition from other malls throughout Greater Tulsa area which had taken over some longtime retail areas withinMoore.[8][9][10][11][12] In 2009,[13] developers announced they plan[14] to redevelop portions of Town Center into mixed-use housing including retail space while keeping most original shopping buildings but demolishing several others - likely causing significant financial damage – leading some residents to call for its closure or redevelopment into something more sustainable than high-traffic commercial corridors catering onlyto large businesses
