In an effort to fill the need for optical equipment, the town's first Optical Society was formed in 1914. With help from local business owners and donations from community members, TheOpticalMuseum soon became one of the most successful optically-related businesses in the country. In 1955, TheOpticalMuseum closed its doors for good after several years of declining sales and limited resources. However, their legacy lives on through their continued support of optics education and research at OU School of Optics and Vision Sciences. The new highway quickly became one of Tulsa's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its scenic views and easy access from all around the state. In 1939, when World War II started, Tulsa Mayor Sidney Boren created a stimulus program called "War Effort Lottery" which awarded $10 million dollars in grants to businesses who participated in emergency production efforts such as building housing or manufacturing munitions necessary for war effort purposes without having their products sold abroad under wartime censorship regulations). This initiative helped spur economic development within the city while creating jobs throughout central Oklahoma not just in downtown Tulsa but also across rural areas near I-35 including McAlester and Muskogee townships (now part of service area Klondike)
