The town is located in northwestern Oklahoma and owes its name to an early settler, John A. Moore. The first permanent white settlers in what is now Moore County arrived in 1854. They were led by Major General James K. Polk who had come overland from Illinois with a force of 3200 cavalry and 7000 infantrymen under his command to purify Indian Territory before it could be taken by Santa Anna as part of Mexican America. In 1855, General Polk founded what would become Shawnee on the east bank of the Arkansas River south of present-day Tulsa. John A. Moore became one of the earliest settlers in what would becomeMoore County on December 20th, 1857 when he purchased two hundred acres (10 square kilometers) east of present-day Shawnee from David Browning for $100 cash plus four horses and a mule team. The site that became Moore was then known as "Turtle Hill." A year later, on February 26th,1858, John A. Moore organized a township () within Shawnee Township () on his land which included current dayMoore County and portions of Tulsa County(). This township() served as both a community center for residents living within its borders and also acted as an outlet for goods brought into Shawnee by travelers travelling through that areaerestrictly off trail or via wagon road (). In 1861.,the Union Army burned down part of Fort Osage near modern Tulsa while retreating from Battle Creek during the American Civil War (). That same year saw another fire when nine hogs were set alight outside Marshall's Tavern (), north sideofpresent-day Tulsa proper (). Kansas Territorial Governor Jno Hetzel issued an Order In Council ordering all military officers and their families to leave Cherokee Nation territory prior to November 1st because "it appeared certain there was going to be fighting"and ordered them instead to settle along present-day Ulysses S Grant Boulevard between Keystone Avenue & 15th Street south central Tulsa (). That same year saw another fire when three cows were set on fire in front of Red River Lighthouse (), northeast cornerofpresent-day Greenwood Village ()) . On October 12th 1865 three soldiers stationed at Fort Osage defense line surrendered after being tortured by Confederate troops under General Andrew Johnson . Three days later Union forces pushed Confederate forces out of Independence Hills southeast of Tulsa after some hard fighting including handtohand combat withstanding several rounds from artillery). On January 14th 1866 General George Armstrong CusterGeneral United States ArmyCuster’s Last Stand () resulted when he rode his horse around pointblank range into an ambush position near Woodward Springs just northwestofpresent-day Jenks()) after leading two columns forward against heavily armed Native Americans while others guarded rear camps

Moore, Oklahoma is a small town in the U.S. state of Oklahoma and the county seat of Roosevelt County. It was founded in 1907 by George Moore, an oil executive and rancher from Arkansas. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Moore opened in 1907, and was renamed Pryor in 1911 after Wm. Pryor, the governor of Arkansas at the time. The name change may have been due to competition from nearby Tulsa, which had become one of America's leading cities thanks to its railroad system and other businesses. In 1916, the town changed its name to Moore after General James S. Moore who had served as commander-in-chief of United States forces during World War I and later became a congressman from Oklahoma City. The post office closed on July 16, 1951.[1] In 1941,[2] during World War II,[3] Roy Rogers set up his movie studio (Roy Rogers' Ranch) on what is now US 281 near present-day Guthrie in Roosevelt County while he was still living there with his wife Nancy Manford[4][5][6] and their three children: Donny Jr., Barbara Jean (née Blanchard), and Timmy Lynn Rogers (billed as Tim Murphy). He continued making movies here until his death in 1986;[7][8][9] all but two were shot on location at ranch sites between 1940–1945—the only time live action pictures were taken anywhere outside Hollywood.[10] A portion of US 281 has been called "Roy Rogers Way" since then for allusions to that period of local history including tourism initiatives spearheaded by city officials over objections from some residents who claimed it would detract from their farming or ranching activities
Moore was founded in 1907 by George Moore, a white man and entrepreneur. The town became a center for cotton production and commerce. In the 1920s, it grew into a city with over 100,000 people. In the 1950s, Moore underwent an economic boom as a result of its oil industry status. The population peaked at around 200,000 in 1970 but declined to around 130,000 by 2000. The economy has since begun to decline again and the population is now only around 100 residents.
