Midwest City is a city in Oklahoma. It was founded in 1907 by the merger of two small settlements, Midwest City and Ottawa. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. Midwest City is located on the Arkansas River just east of Tulsa and west of McAlester. Oklahoma's history can be traced back to 1867 when the territory became part of Mexico. In that year, President Ulysses S. Grant issued an executive order creating territorial governments throughout present-day Oklahoma Territory. On January 3, 1907, these government entities met to create a new city name: Midwest City. The merger occurred because there were no other cities within ten miles of downtown Oklahoma City proper; Ottawa had been established as far east as Guthrie and Midwest City had been established as far west as Owasso (now Jenks). Because Ottawa lay directly on top of what would later become Tulsa County, it was decided that this newly formed town should have its own county seat – which it did on February 14, 1907. The first settlers in Midwest City arrived during the early 1900s, primarily from Illinois and Michigan. They constructed log homes or bought them from Native American families who had abandoned their settlements near Muskogee Creek due to gold discoveries in that area. By 1910, Midwestern City boasted a population of around 100 people – all men! This lack of women allowed for masculinization of many social institutions such as business organizations and political parties – both which were important during those years before women began to gain equality inside and outsideOf marriage throughout much of America (Lambert 1990). As time passed though and more women came into town (largely through migration), MidwesternCity’s male-dominated society began to change gradually but surely; until finally becoming fully integrated into Tulsa County by 1920 (Fischer pers., pgs 171-172). In 1925 Congress passed the National Defense Act which allocated $5 million dollars to help rebuild America after World War I; this event helped spur development in Tulsa County specifically around Finley Air Force Base where thousands new jobs were created thanks to General Electric’s pursuit Of air defense against Japanese bombers flying over North America (Fischer pers., pg 173). With so many new resources coming into town after World War II – most notably oil exploration along the Arkansas River – MidwesternCity quickly became one of the most important economic engines within Tulsa County overall (Goudreau 1991a). During post-war times growth continued unabated with businesses expanding onto every inch of land available; until suddenly everything changed with OPEC’s decision To embargo Iraqi oil exports in 1973ceasing global trade resulted in unprecedented joblessness for local businessmen leading up to rioting that followed dubbed “The Great Oklahoma Explosion”(Kurtzman 2002) .
