In 1830, Methodist missionaries First Baptist Church built a church on Second Street in downtown Midwest City; it became known as "The Big White" because its white clapboard facade was so large and stark against the surrounding tan-colored buildings. The Methodists established several schools including one operated by George Tilton which merged with Baylor University in 1907 to form Baylor University School of Medicine; however, due to budgetary cuts within Baylor University's own administration during World War II it closed its doors in 1951 and reopened as Dowling-Tilton College (now known as Midwestern State University). A fire destroyed much of downtown Tulsa on November 3rd 1909 and again December 9th 1915 respectively causing extensive damage although only $3 worth of damage was caused by arson each time A bill authorizing buildingof a new courthouse for Tulsa passed both houses of Congress on October 15th 1902 with Mayor Wm Hennepin dissenting resulting in him becoming America's first mayor from an oil capital when he signed the bill into law on November 4th 1902 On January 1st 1906 Tulsa voters approved Proposition 1 making their city an unincorporated town within caddo County subject only to local taxation under certain conditions including having no more than five thousand residents within any one precinct or limits . On February 2nd 1906 construction began on what would become State Fair Park located currently south east off I-40 between Broadway and Dickerson Streets adjacent to Grady Memorial Hospital ; fairs were held here every year until 1963 when they were moved to Edmondson Park southeast off I-44 near Keystone Kops Shopping Center . Midwest City's original name was "Oklahoma City" before changing back to "Oklahoma City - Downtown" following annexation by Tulsa in 1907 City Hall Annexation resulted in creation of what are today Downtown Oklahoma Civic District headquartered inside former Chamber Of Commerce Building next door to current OKCupid HQ
