The history of downtown Midwest City can be traced back to 1881 when Plainsboro was established as a small farming community on what is now known as Saginaw Boulevard just east of US 36th Street between Shawnee Hills Boulevard and Keystone Avenue near modern day Nichols Road. The original settlers were farmers who moved from eastern Kansas due to railroad construction; Plainsboro became a town on October 6, 1907 following passage of an act by the Territorial Legislature designating wilderness within Rogers County south of US 36th Street between Shawnee Hills Boulevard and Keystone Avenue southeast of today’s Nichols Road intersection; annexed by Tulsa September 15, 1912; designated “Plainsboro” November 1st 1913 through proclamation issued by Governor Hezekiah Bixby
Midwest City was founded in 1907 by J.C. Hulbert and A.L. Hecker as a small town on the edge of Wichita County, Kansas. The post office and banking district were located in what is now downtown Midwest City, while the school, mercantile district, and other businesses were located east of the river around First Street and Broadway. By 1911, Midwest City had a population of over 575 people and was growing rapidly with new businesses being opened to serve the growing community. In 1916, Midwest City hosted its first municipal election which saw the election of Mayor Wm.Bryan as well as six other city officials including two constables and four street commissioners who were responsible for maintaining order in the community. In 1922, Midwest City became one of thirty-six cities in Oklahoma that joined the statehood movement which saw Oklahoma become a normal U.S. state without requiring an amendment to their Constitution like Kansas did which led to rapid growth in local industry such as farming, manufacturing, transportation and service sectors which continues until today with Downtown still serving as center of business activity for both locals and visitors alike
