Midwest City, Oklahoma is a small town located in the Great Plains of North America. It was founded by settlers in 1881 and is now a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of about 24,000. The city was named for the Missouri River Valley where it was settled. The area that would become Midwest City had been wanderers’ camps since the 17th century. By 1881, there were only 9 people living in what would eventually be called Midwest City. The first post office opened in that year and served as the community's primary center of operations until 1907. During World War II, Midwest City played an important role as a munition production center for the United States military. One of its largest employers was Boeing Company which built their first airplane factory here between 1945 and 1947. In recent years, Midwest City has seen some growth as a result of its location near Interstate 40 and Tulsa County Airport. In addition to its importance as an industrial center and munitions plant during World War II, today's Midwest City also contains several popular tourist attractions including Guthrie State University, Oil Can Western Museum, downtown arts district nicknamed "the heart of town", and the Oklahoma African American Museum

The city experienced significant growth after World War II, and by 1970 it had reached its peak population with over 100,000 residents. However, during the late 1970s and early 1980s local economic conditions declined amid a series of economic downturns in Oklahoma. In 1990, Midwest City lost its status as an important city within Oklahoma and it ceased to exist as an independent municipality.
One of the most significant events in Midwest City's history occurred on November 9, 1907. That day, a group of men from the towncouncil organized a strike against local oil tycoon John Wesley Hardin. The strikers successfully blocked Hardin's access to oil funds, and their victory inspired other Midwestern towns to take up similar protests. This movement led to the creation of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) and helped bring about major social changes in America during the early twentieth century.
